Blog

Keeping upholstery clean when you have kids and pets in the home can be a challenge. All of the money that you've spent to furnish your home shouldn't be wasted just because the kids are having a little more fun than they should in the house. Fortunately, you can keep your upholstered furniture looking great, even with kids and pets in the home. Here, you'll find a few tips to help you do just that.

Schedule Regular Upholstery Cleaning Treatments

Having your upholstered furniture cleaned on a regular basis will help to reduce the contaminants that build up inside, as well as protect the appearance. How often do you need to have the furniture cleaned? Well, that's all determined by the type of household you keep. Do you vacuum your furniture each week? Do you allow pets on the furniture? Do you eat on the furniture? Do you smoke in the home?

The busier your home, the more often the furniture will likely need to be cleaned. A good rule of thumb is to schedule a regular cleaning for once each year. You can always call them to come out and spot clean stains or completely clean something that needs it sooner than the one-year mark.

Keep a Cleaning Kit On Hand

Create a small cleaning caddy that has everything that you'll need to clean up carpet and upholstery messes. This kit should include a roll of high-quality paper towels or a few clean, white cloths, a spray bottle with 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 cups of water mixed inside. and a toothbrush.

When you notice a spot appear on your furniture or carpeting, spray a few pumps of the mixture onto a cloth or paper towel. Blot the area a few times and check the towel — do you see the substance coming off of the material onto the towel? If so, continue blotting. If not, you'll need to spray the mixture directly onto the spot and let it sit for a minute. Then, blot, blot, and blot some more until the spot is gone.

Tip: If the white vinegar doesn't do the trick, you can use a Tide Stain Stick or OxyClean solution on the spot. Just make sure to test these products in an area that isn't easily seen to ensure that it won't pull the coloring out of the upholstery or carpeting.
