Three Carpet Cleaning Secrets That Professionals Use: And You Can, Too

Blog

Have you ever admired a carpet that was just professionally cleaned, wondering how the pros could possibly do such a good job? One reason why professional cleaning is so effective is that they have high-powered equipment that extracts more water and dirt than the average home carpet shampooing system can remove. However, they also know a few tricks that you can use, too.

Blot stains; don't rub them

When you encounter a stain or a spill on your carpet, your first instinct may be to start rubbing it to soak up the staining material. But rubbing can just drive the color deeper into the carpet fibers. Professionals always blot stains rather than rubbing them. Set a towel or washcloth on top of the spill, and press straight down. Much of the liquid should soak up into the towel. Repeat this process with a clean towel or cloth until you're no longer drawing up any more liquid. If you use a stain remover or cleaner, always soak it up with the same blotting motion.

Use dish soap on greasy stains

You just can't beat dish soap when it comes to removing greasy stains. Even the professionals often use it. Buy the extra concentrated version, and add a big squeeze to about a cup of water. Spray the mixture onto a greasy stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then blot it up as described above. This mixture will go a long way towards helping you remove food stains, including those from sauces, completely. The dish soap breaks down the grease molecules, freeing them from the carpet fibers.

Use heat and cold as needed

If you have wax, gum, or other sticky items on your carpet, a professional is likely to turn to the power of temperature. They may have heating and freezing tools they can use, but you can replicate these effects with things you have around home. For gum, chill the gum using an ice cube; it will be easy to pick off of the carpet fibers when it's hard and frozen. For wax, try melting some of it with a spoon that you've held over a lighter for a minute or two. Melt some of the wax, wipe it off with a cloth, and then melt a little more wax, and wipe it off.

By blotting stains, using dish soap, and relying on heat and cold, you can get more professional results whenever you clean your carpet. For more information, contact a business such as Campo's On The Spot Carpet Services INC.
