Tips To Help You Remove The Smell Of Cat Urine From Your Carpeting

Blog

You may love your cat more than anything, but when you discover they have begun to pee on your carpeting and not in their litter box, it can create a big problem. The reason for this is because when cat urine sits, the bacteria in it begins to decompose and give off an ammonia smell, which has a strong odor and is hard to remove from materials. If your cat continues to smell the urine in the carpeting, even if you have cleaned it, they will continue to urinate in the area. Here are some tips to help you remove cat urine from your home carpeting.

Act Quickly

It is recommended to clean up any cat urine spots as soon as possible from your carpeting. The longer the urine remains and dries in the carpeting, the stronger it will smell and the harder it will be to remove the odors.

Start by blotting up as much of the moisture with some paper towels. Then, rinse the area with cold water by using a carpet cleaning machine over the spot. You can also spray the area well with a bottle of water, then suck it up with a wet/dry vacuum. Don't use warm or hot water during this step, as the heat can set the odors into the carpeting.

Clean with Household Cleaning Items

You can use a combination of vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide to clean a cat urine spot:

  1. After blotting up any wet urine spots with paper towels, pour equal parts of white vinegar and water onto the urine spot.
  2. Let the vinegar sit in the carpeting until it has begun to dry.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda all over the spot.
  4. Combine four parts hydrogen peroxide to one part liquid dish soap and rub it into the carpeting. You can use your fingers or a scrub brush to work the mixture into the carpeting fibers.
  5. Allow the mixture to dry in the carpeting, then vacuum it up.
  6. Repeat this process until the smell is no longer coming from your carpeting.

Use Enzymatic Cleaners

Enzymatic cleaners are also a good way to clean cat urine from carpeting. Spray the carpeting with an enzymatic cleaner until it is fully wet. The enzymes in the cleaner will release cultures that eat the urine until the bad smells are gone from the site.

You can hire a professional carpet cleaning company to use an enzymatic cleaner over your carpets. This can be helpful if your cat has urinated over large areas of carpeting, or you are not sure of the exact location of the urine and you want to be sure to clean it all.
